Photography: The High Line 8/30/25
The High Line, Midtown Manhattan NYC 8/30/25: The first week or so of this site’s hiatus were especially difficult. There were two days in which I had felt the lowest I had felt in some time. I hadn’t showered. And with the exception of taking out my garbage, which had to be done, I hadn’t left my apartment in a couple of days.
That should make sense, right? I spent every day of the past 15+ years working on something JOVM-related. So, not doing something felt unmooring and depressing. When I could, i’d apply to grants and jobs, fret and worry, then spend more time looking for grants and jobs until I fell asleep with everything on.
I was desperate to get out of my apartment. If anything, I needed to just not be in my head for a couple of hours. So I wound up at The High Line for the first time in a couple of years with my Canon R6 Mark II, which I hadn’t touched in about a week or so. And it helped that it was a gorgeous day with a hint of fall in the air.

The Joy of Violent Movement is a completely independent and completely D.I.Y. media outlet. Over the course of this site’s 15+ year history, I’ve used my fiercely independent stance to cover music with an eclectic and global perspective that a lot of other publications just don’t have — and will likely never have.
To that end, I could use your support to continue to keep bringing you my unique global perspective on music. There are a number of ways that you can support this work.
I’ve been told that some people would prefer to make a one-time donation because it’s easy and less of an obligation. So, if you’re able to make a one-time donation, there’s a donation box below.
