Rouyn-Noranda, QC is the home of the only primary copper smelter in Canada, the Horne Smelter. Towering over the town and practically viewable from just about everywhere in town, Horne Smelter processes roughly 210,000-700,000 tons of copper concentrates and electronic scrap materials annually.

The byproducts of the smelter’s processing is arsenic — and at much higher levels than Canadian federal limits.
Understandably, locals were livid.

Throughout town, you’ll come across posters, stickers and graffiti referencing the smelter plant and arsenic.
