Stop Mass Incarceration Network Demonstrations for Trayon Martin and California Prison Hunger Strikers at Union Square 7/19/13

After work, I ran downtown to Union Square to catch the Stop Mass Incarceration Network’s demonstrations for Trayvon Martin and the California Prison Hunger Strikers. Shamefully, they had a much smaller showing than I anticipated but I imagine that there were a couple of factors that prevented a larger turnout including – we had been on the fifth day of temperatures in the high 90s and heat indices of the low 100s; I also suspect that naturally a lot of people are scared to protest, knowing that the police in various localities have been known to use strong-arm tactics; additionally, the fact that they gathered at 5, instead of at 5:30 or 6, would have made it difficult for many cubicle commandos to join in. In any case, i was there, to catch some of the proceedings and I’ll let the photos speak for themselves.

I used to see this man on occasion last summer when the Occupiers had Union Square.
