Summer festival season is right around the corner. It’ll be sooner than you think! And of course, that means festival announcements. So let’s get to it!

The 50th edition of Bumbershoot: Seattle’s Arts & Music Festival will take place at the Seattle Center September 2, 2023 – September 3, 2023. Yesterday, festival organizers announced the daily lineups for this year’s edition, as well as a collection of new musical acts.

Saturday will feature Olympia’s indie legends Sleater-Kinney, an electronic set from globally renowned producer Zhu, Grammy Award-nominee Brittany Howard, Seattle-based indie outfit Sunny Day Real Estate, Durand Jones, Matt and Kim, shoegazer legends RIDE, Jacob Banks, AFI, and more. Sunday will feature the likes of The Revivalists, post-hardcore band Jawbreaker, Fatboy Slim, Phantogram, Seattle’s Band of Horses, Bomba Estereo, Uncle Waffles, A-Trak and more.

Festival organizers also announced some new additions to a stacked lineup that include renowned, feminist art rockers Pussy Riot, Maya Jane Coles, Shannon and The Clams and TV Star.

The reimagined Bumbershoot Music & Arts Festival is a partnership between two organizers — non-profit Third Stone and festival producer New Rising Sun. Earlier this year, Third Stone launched the tuition free Bumbershoot Workforce Development Program in partnership with The UC Theatre’s Concert Career Pathways Program (CCP-X). The tuition-free, hands-on training program removes the barriers of entry into the live music business for young people 17-25 years-old from historically marginalized communities, supporting the next generation of music industry professionals while laying the groundwork for a more equitable and inclusive music industry. The six month program focuses on teaching the behind-the-scenes aspects of concert promotion and production, combined with job-shadowing and paid internships, which culminates with jobs at the festival during Labor Day Weekend.

The inaugural Bumbershoot Workforce Development Program’s 16 participants began a series of workshops, speaker series and shadow shifts in partnership with music industry professionals and organizations like Seattle’s The Crocodile and The Triple Door, as well as TeenTix. The program’s participants learn highly marketable skills such as event production, sound engineering, marketing, talent buying, event budgeting, and more. Using a “festival as classroom” philosophy, Third Stone’s vision for success is that in ten years, the festival will be managed by alumni of the program.

Single day tickets and weekend tickets are available for purchase here. In celebration of Bumbershoot’s 50th anniversary, Bumbershoot and Amazon are offering prices that are 50% lower than the last edition back in 2019. The idea is to create an opportunity for more folks from the Pacific Northwest community to attend and enjoy the festival. Third Stone with Amazon are also supporting the distribution of 5,000 free tickets that will go directly to nonprofits and underserved communities. And importantly, a portion of ticket proceeds will go towards supporting the Bumbershoot Workforce Development program.

 

New Audio: Acclaimed Punk Act Ceremony Releases a Shimmering Post-Punk Inspired Single

Currently featuring Ross Farrar (vocals), Anthony Anzaldo (guitar), Justin Davis (bass), Andy Nelson (guitar) and Jake Casarotti (drums), the Rohnert Park, CA-based punk act Ceremony can trace their origins to 2005, when they formed as a sextet with Farrar, Anzaldo, Davis, Nelson, Casarotti and Ryan Mattos (guitar) under the name Violent World before eventually changing their name. 

With the release of their earliest work — in particular, 2005’s Ruined EP and Violence Violence, 2008’s Still Nothing Move You, the band quickly developed a reputation for a relentlessly brutal and bruising hardcore punk sound compared to the likes of Infest and others. Building upon a growing profile, the Rohnert Park, CA-based punk act toured across the world with bands like Blacklisted, Converge, and AFI before releasing 2010’s Rohnert Park. 

Shortly before they signed to Matador Records in 2011, the band went through a lineup change with the departure of Ryan Mattos. The following year saw the release of the band’s fourth album Zoo, an album that was a radical sonic departure from the band, as it saw them moving from the bruising hardcore sound of their earliest efforts towards a pre-hardcore, post-punk inspired sound much like Pink Flag-era Wire. 2015’s The L-Shaped Man found the band sonically moving further towards post-punk with a sound that was compared to the likes of Joy Division and others. 

The band’s soon-to-be released sixth album In The Spirit World Now is slated for an August 23, 2019 release through Relapse Records and the album reportedly finds the band’s sound further pulling from the post punk influences that’s driven their last couple of albums — but there’s also a bit of a rock influence. And unsurprisingly, the band has managed to evolve their sound while remaining true to themselves as songwriters and artists.  Interestingly, the album’s latest single, the hook-driven “Presaging the End” is centered around shimmering and slashing guitars and a motorik-like groove, the song finds the acclaimed punk act sounding much more like The Fixx — in particular “The Sign of Fire” and “Red Skies” but while retaining a punk rock intensity and earnestness. 

New Video: JOVM Mainstays Holy Wars Release a Socially Conscious, Horror Film Inspired Visual for “Born Dark”

Last year, I had written quite a bit about Holy Wars, led by Connecticut-born, Los Angeles, CA-based singer/songwriter Kat Leon, and as you may recall, Leon initially developed a reputation for writing material that focused largely on her obsessions with death and the occult as one-half the of the Los Angeles-based electro pop act Sad Robot. Leon’s critically applauded Holy Wars debut Mother Father was influenced by some of the darkest days of her life — when she was reeling from the sudden losses of her mother and father, who both died within months of each other. Building upon the attention she received here and elsewhere with Mother Father, Leon’s latest Holy Wars single “Born Dark” was produced by AFI’s Hunter Burgan, and while arguably being among the slickest produced singles she’s released, the arena rock friendly, hook-driven track is centered by propulsive tribal drumming, buzzing power chords and Leon’s pop star-like powerhouse vocals — and sonically the song manages to nod at Nine Inch Nails, Garbage and Siouxsie and the Banshees in a self-assured and ambitious fashion.

The track reportedly finds Leon going back to her roots — literally — as she explores the very moment of her birth, with the possibility that she may have been a bit of a bad seed, if not devilish, complete with a “don’t give a single fuck” swagger. Interestingly, the recently released video, directed by Kat Leon and Mel Hummel stars Leon as a murderous femme fatale/Barbie doll-type, pointing at the unrealistic representations of what women are supposed to be, act and look.

As Leon explains in press notes, “Growing up, little girls were given fashion dolls to play with as an expectation of what ‘women’ were supposed to look like and act like. It was an unrealistic representation of what we actually are and early on there were no variety to these dolls. There were no gothic or ‘darker’ dolls for years, or gender bending or anything other than what that skinny, blonde bubbly doll represented… the subtle brainwashing of our society. ‘Born Dark’ starts with the original pageant beauty queen doll but this doll carries a dark secret… she is a seductive killer with a thirst for blood. It all starts where the crown is given to another doll and our Born Dark Beauty grabs her first kill for the crown. The journey continues with each character introduced furthering the story of just how dark this doll is. Playing on the dark nature of the song, we decided to go with an overall moody, edgy and vintage vibe for the video starting with the French foreign film introduction to the song. The music video blends the reality between doll vs. human with foreshadowing and FX where the audience is left to question what is real and who is the true ‘character’ in this thriller. The murders are shown in a way where you aren’t sure of just who exactly the true killer is. Is the doll a figment of Kat’s imagination or the other way around?”
