Twintapes at Piano’s 2/19/14

Last Thursday was a pretty typical night for me in some respects – I first stopped at Rockwood Music Hall to catch a very dear friend of this site, Nicola play an acoustic set and ran into a dear friend who i don’t see as often as I’d like. And naturally, I wound up losing track of time to the point that I had to bolt out the door to Piano’s to catch indie electro pop act Twintapes.

Interestingly, the trio of Twintapes had a sound that at times reminded me of mid 80s New Order and Cut Copy, thanks to glistening synths, pulsating beats and earnest, plaintive vocals. Sure, it wasn’t the most original thing I’ve heard – I’ve obviously heard it before – but it was slickly produced, and quite danceable, despite the fact that the crowd at Piano’s generally seemed too awkward, too self-conscious and too pretentious to dance. Ah, young hipsters.
