When you think of New Orleans – and in particular New Orleans jazz, a few names should immediately come to mind: Louis Armstrong, the Marsalis family, Harry Connick, Jr. Kermit Ruffins, and countless others. Ruffins’ forthcoming album, We Partyin’ Traditional Style, which is slated for a May 28th release through New Orleans-based Basin Street Records and the album is a mix of both traditional jazz standards and New Orleans jazz standards – essentially all of the stuff that inspired Ruffins, going back to his days as a busker.
If you know anything about jazz, you know this – jazz musicians tend to be relentlessly adventurous: as much as they may pay homage to the past, the most talented artists manage to reinvent and re-interpret the past in a way that contemporary fans can access it. “I Got a Treme Woman,” is the first single from Ruffins’ forthcoming album, and his rendition of the song is playfully flirtatious and it really swings.
