Afrolicious has developed a reputation for being both one of the premier weekly dance parties in the San Francisco area (which I should note is sadly coming to an end), and one of that area’s top sound system crews/electronic acts heavily inspired by the sounds of Afrobeat and funk. And since their founding, the band has released a number of singles and an EP that have been received quite well across the blogosphere. The band will be releasing a new effort California Dreaming Remixed on June 17, and the effort will include remixes from Thievery Corporation’s Rob Garza and others.
Rob Garza’s remix of “Give It All Up” employs the use of glistening, undulating synths, propulsive percussion and stuttering vocal sample . Interestingly, the use of cowbell throughout the song evokes DFA Records/LCD Soundsystem – but more importantly, Garza’s remix turns the song into a house music track that could rock a club.
