After about a decade of playing in NYC’s underground punk scene, the Queens-based Panopoulos brothers, Teddy (vocals) and Nick (guitar and backing vocals) teamed up with Fabien Stret (drums) to form Dead Waves. Although the band hasn’t been together very long – they’ve been together about a year as Dead Waves – they’ve been extremely prolific. June marked the release of their Kill the Youth EPand the trio has followed it up with the Take Me Away EP. And from what I’ve been told, they have another batch of songs that may either be the next EP or an upcoming full-length.

“Instead” is the latest single from the Take Me Away EP, and much like the EP’s first single, “Over Me,” bears a resemblance to Nirvana – albeit, the scuzzy, lo-fi sound of Incestide. We’re talking about sludgy power chords, howled lyrics, thundering drums and propulsive bass … As I said of the previous single, it kicks ass. in a way that will likely start up a mosh pit.
