New Audio: Ruthven Shares Dance floor Friendly “Kiss Goodnight”
Throughout his nearly decade-long career, South London-based producer, singer/songwriter and musician Sean Nelson, best known as Ruthven, emerged in 2017 as a co-founding member of The Paul Institute with A.K.Paul and Jai Paul, while Nelson was simultaneously as a firefighter with the London Fire Brigade.
Between emergency calls and equipment checks, the South London-based artist meticulously shaped the songs that would eventually comprise last year’s Rough & Ready, which was released to widespread praise across the UK and elsewhere. The response to the album lead to collaborations and opening slots with Sampha, Berwyn and Overmono, helping to further cement Nelson’s growing reputation as one of the UK’s most compelling, emerging voices.
Ruthven closes out 2025 with the recently released Precognition EP, an exploratory three-track EP that marks the beginning of a bold new chapter for the South London-based artist. Where Rough & Ready introduced an artist with a meticulous production style and a fiercely individual voice, Precognition EP captures Nelson writing much more instinctively, leaning deeply into the warmth and dynamism of live instrumentation, inspired by his recent live shows. “This small body of work feels like a good segue into the next era for me” Ruthven says. “I’m using a lot more live instrumentation and programming a little bit less. Playing more guitar, more acoustic drums – all of which have formed a new sound for me. The fundamental DNA of my music is there, but there’s a new evolution. This is the first of it.”
The EP sees Nelson moving freely between funk, disco and classic songwriting. And as you’ll hear on the hook-driven, disco funk-tinged “Kiss Goodnight,” Nelson has an unerring knack for crafting a catchy, dance floor friendly groove anchored around glistening synth arpeggios and a supple bass line paired with Nelson’s effortless yet heartfelt croon. If you’re a fellow old, this one will likely bring memories of Prince, Morris Day and The Time, Cherrelle and several others.
New Video: Hop! Hop! Diablo Funk Share Joyous and Funky “Bailas como un diablo”
Since forming back in 2014, Mexican outfit Hop! Hop! Diablo Funk — Jud (vocal) MC Rita (guitar), Coros Perico (guitar), Coros Damien (drums), Jona (trumpet), Bajo Hector (trumpet), Eli (sax), Dyanata (trombone) — have stood out for crafting a sound that draws from rock, funk and several other genres paired with lyrics that address every day life situations, social issues and more.
While making their rounds of their national festival circuit with sets at La Fiesta de la Música, Rock x la Vida, Vibra Chapultepec, Zocalo, Hop! Hop! Diablo Funk, the band has also established a reputation for a dynamic and fun live set.
Hop! Hop! Diablo Funk’s latest single “Bailas como un diablo” is an ecstatic, nostalgia-including song that channels a seamless synthesis of 80s Gloria Estefan and the Miami Sound Machine and 70s disco while showcasing a band that can craft a dance floor friendly groove and a remarkably catchy hook.
Look, shit is bleak right now. And it’s going to get dire — soon. This song is a much-needed joy bomb, a reminder that everyone has to grab hold of a bit of fun whenever and however they could. It’s the only way that you’ll be able to survive.
FYI: For those who are sensitive to strobe light, the accompanying video features flashing lights. Besides that the video features the band — fittingly — playing on a flashing Saturday Night Fever-inspired stage with a disco ball just above them.
New Video: L’Eclair Teams Up WIth girl named GOLDEN on Languorous and Glittering “THE GLITCH”
With recorded output that includes 2018’s full-length debut, Polymood, 2019’s Sauropoda, 2020’s Noshtta EP and 2021’s Confusions, the acclaimed Swiss-based group L’Eclair, founded and led by Bulgarian-born siblings Stef and Yavov Lilov firmly established themselves as masters of mind-bending, cosmic-leaning groove.
Along with two live sessions for KEXP, which amassed over 900,000 views combined, the Swiss-based group have built up an international following, while landing on the playlists of adventurous listeners and DJs seeking deep grooves.
Meticulously crafted over the past four years, the acclaimed JOVM mainstays, highly-anticipated and recently released fourth album Cloud Drifter is a decided and radical departure from the Belgian group’s long-held instrumental approach with the album’s material featuring vocals from a wide and eclectic array of frequent collaborations that they’ve worked with over the past few years, including including Pink Slifu, Girl Named GOLDEN, Gelli Haha, A Ghost Column, and more.
Having toured with The Cinematic Orchestra and W.I.T.C.H. — including writing and recording W.I.T.C.H.’s 2023 effort Zango and The Cinematic Orchestra’s forthcoming album this year, as well as production work with Varnish La Piscine and Maston, the Lilov brothers have assembled a vast network of likeminded musicians. And across the entire album, they keenly curate a cohesive vision incorporating many disparate contributions.
In the lead-up to Cloud Drifter‘s release, I’ve written about three of the album’s singles:
- “ODESSOS,” featuring Phoebe Coco and A Ghost Column
- “VERTIGO“
- “REPLICA M001,” featuring Pink Slifu
CLOUD DRIFTER’S latest single “The GLITCH” feat. girl named GOLDEN is anchored around a slow-burning, languorous disco groove that serves as a lush bed for girl named GOLDEN’s dreamily yearning cooing.
The accompanying video for “THE GLITCH” features kaleidoscopically edited super 8 filmed footage of girl named GOLDEN performing at The Sultan Room, life on tour and in the studio with the acclaimed Belgians.

New Video: Moscow’s The Diasonics Shares Mind-Bending “Oriole”
Formed back in 2019, Moscow-based instrumental soul quintet The Diasonics — Daniel Lutsenko (guitar), Kamil Gazizov (keys), Maksim Brusov (bass), Anton Moskvin (drums) and newest member Alexander Shingaling (percussion) — quickly gained cult status through […]
