New Video: BUÑUEL Shares Bruising and Breakneck “High. Speed. Chase.”

BUÑUEL — OXBOW‘s Eugene S. Robinson, Afterhours and A Short Apnea‘s Xabier Iriondo (guitar), The Framers‘ Andrea Lombardini (bass) and Il Teatro Degli Orroris Franz Valente (drums) — is a transatlantic supergroup that specializes in heavy music that’s been described as beautiful, merciless and unforgiving. 

Creatively, the band has always been led by instinct and the id-like impulse to expressed completely unfiltered and unvarnished emotion through song. And through their close musical alliance, they’ve displayed a seemingly innate ability to craft material that warps and buckles with complexity, freedom, tenderness and primeval energy — simultaneously. 

“BUÑUEL is a name that embodies a certain cultural and literary reference, which evokes an entire world,” the band’s Franz Valente says. “Like his films, our Buñuel is surrealism. We take the listeners into a place that’s suspended between dream and reality.” Eugene S. Robinson adds “What we’re doing with BUÑUEL is to carve out a very specific glimpse… partly into hearts of darkness, but more specifically into the depth of our secrets. Secrets we keep from each other, ourselves and whatever futures we’ve imagined for ourselves. We are ultimately trying to communicate something direct and deadly about the human condition.”

The transatlantic supergroup’s latest album, 2024’s Timo Ellis-produced Mansuetude derived its title from an archaic word which means “meekness” or “gentleness.” For a band known for being punishingly heavy, the title is an ironic juxtaposition. Firmly anchored in their long-held penchant for surrealism, the album saw the band taking every possible opportunity toad stretch their musical tendrils towards discomfort and deconstruction of tradition, while pushing towards absolute abandon.

Sonically, the album’s material encompassed many moods — sometimes simultaneously — while blurring elements of post-hardcore, avant-noise, hard blues, post-industrial, symphonic thrash, metal and free-jazz. The record is, in Robinson’s words “extreme but articulate.” 

The album featured the previously released “Class,” “American Steel,” feat. The Jesus Lizard‘s Tomahawk‘s and The Denison Kimball Trio‘s Duane Denison, “A Killing on the Beach,” and its latest single, “High. Speed. Chase.”

“High. Speed. Chase.” is a bruising and breakneck, mosh pit inducing ripper, anchored around a furious and unhinged Robinson vocal turn, scorching riffage and thunderous drumming. At its core, the song expresses a mix of rage, confusion and ad desire to defy death — and in some way, it also makes the song the perfect soundtrack for the titular high speed chase.

Directed by Annapaola Martin, the accompanying video for “High. Speed. Chase.” is split between footage shot on the road with city skylines, highways and convenience stores race by through the windows, and footage of the band destroying stages with their incendiary live show.

New Audio: Atomsmasher Shares Breakneck “Cartoon Violence”

Led by siblings Ed Erenberg (vocals, guitar) and Brett Erenberg (keys), Atomsmasher formed in suburban New York and made its mark with their full-length debut, 1998’s Up & Atom, a cult favorite that saw the band mixing power pop hooks with restless experimentation, anchored around densely layered guitars, stacked harmonies and lyrics that balance absurdist humor with piercing observation. 2004’s All Around the World and 2014’s Each Day Is Better Than the Next saw the band expanding upon their reputation for eclectic yet cohesive rock, while weaving diverse influences from Julian Cope to Pixies into something completely their own.

Over the years, their work has received airplay on college radio and spots on television shows, helping the band amass a loyal following with the New York City Metropolitan Area’s live music circuit.

Last year’s Keep This Secret was the first Atmosmasher album in over a decade. The album sees the band crating material that showcased the band’s signature sound: tight arrangements with sly lyrical turns within songs that are forcefully immediate and catchy.

“Cartoon Violence,” the first single since Keep This Secret is a frenetic, breakneck ripper that’s one-part math rock, one-part Queens of the Stone Age-like stoner rock that showcases the band’s unerring knack for hookiness paired with a playful sense of menace.

Live Footage: DVTR “Live on the Big Rusty Ferry”

Montréal-based JOVM mainstays DVTR —  Le Couleur‘s Laurence G-Do a.k.a. Demi Lune and Gazoline‘s,  Kandle‘s Xavier Caféine‘s and Gab Bouchard‘s JC Tellier, a.k.a. Jean Divorce — have exploded into the Canadian indie scene with the release of their debut EP, 2023’s BONJOUR. The EP earned a plethora of rapturous reviews, landed on a number of Best of 2023 lists and earned the duo the first batch of a growing number of Québec-based music industry awards.

Building upon 2023’s momentum, the duo released an expanded edition of their debut EP, 2024’s BONJOUR (BIS), which featured a couple of bonus tracks.

The Montrealers supported the original and expanded editions of BONJOUR EP with a frenetic and whirlwind world tour that saw the band playing sets across the international club and festival circuit in Asia, Mexico, Germany, Québec and France. During this remarkably busy period,. the duo released a live album on VHS — yes, VHS! — and added a few more awards to their already crowded mantle, including the 2025 Breakout Artist of the Year at the GAMIQ Gala early last year. And they also managed to release new material, including “Né pour flâner (Born to loiter),” and “Couleur peau (Your Next Token Asian Friend).

The duo along with their live backing band of masked minions/henchmen filmed a blistering and unhinged 17-minute live session on a big rusting ferry on the St. Lawrence River. Live on the Big Rusty Ferry features live version of BONJOUR tracks “Anu Cuni,” “Les flics,” “Vasectomia,” “Rhum cokeMD” and “Sound $ex Change,” and “DVTR,” as well as last year’s standalone “Né pour flâner,” and accurately captures the wild and frenetic energy that has helped the act win fans at clubs and festivals across the globe.

New Audio: The X-Flowers Share a Rousingly Anthemic Ripper

The X-Flowers are a mysterious and emerging punk outfit, who, released their debut EP, the three-song First Bloom last year.

The punk outfit begin the new year with “Tilted,” a rousing, mosh pit friendly ripper that seemingly channels a synthesis of Joan Jett, 90s grunge and riot grrl-era punk.

Albums of the Year 2025

JOVM turns 16 this year. And for first handful of years, my Best of List was an annual tradition until about 2014 or so. Between 2014 and 2020, it became sporadic and then it stopped. I haven’t done one of these in several years. There was a part of me that wondered if it really mattered much. And then life happened.
