Things look a bit different around here. There’s a reason for that: Regular freelance work dried up for me last July. Not much has gone on with full-time work, or anything else. Whatever meager earnings and savings I had evaporated quickly. So when it came to a number of subscriptions, including WordPress, I couldn’t afford to renew them — and now here we are. A weird placeholder and a weird layout that I don’t particularly like. I’m trying to keep the show running as best as I can until things get better. But I have to admit that I’ve been feeling extremely discouraged. Sigh. If anyone has leads to work — freelance, part-time, contracted, project and/or full-time — that would be much appreciated.

So let’s get to back to the business at hand. . . . Earlier this month, Capital One City Parks Foundation SummerStage hosted two showcases at Flushing Meadows-Corona Park: Saturday night was DJ Rekha’s Basement Beyond, which featured rising Punjabi-born, London-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Rahsmeet Kaur; London-born, New York-based DJ Rekha, the creator of Basement Bhangra, who also served as the night’s emcee; Bengali-British singer/songwriter and musician Tara Lily; and Brooklyn-based singer/songwriter, composer and multi-instrumentalist Sonny Singh, an original member of Red Baraat, whose own work as a solo artist and bandleader, explores new and modern renderings of Sikh devotional music. Sunday night featured the world-famous, hardest working band in music today, The Roots. DJ Scratch warmed the crowd up as an opener with a collection of old school jams and his incredible turntabllism skills.
