Comprised of Jay Nemeyer (vocals, guitar), Josh Hunter (guitar, keys, bass), Matt Hartenau (drums), Rogerio Naressi (keys) and Maryjo Mattea (vocals), the Washington, DC-based indie electro rock and synth pop sextet Color Palette have received attention both locally and internationally, including from the likes of NME Magazine, USA Today, NPR and Impose Magazinewith the release of their 2016 full-length debut Vaporwave, an album that features material which focused on heartbreak and love. Adding to a growing profile, the band has been on bills with a lengthy list of renowned artists including Charli XCX, The Naked and Famous, Mother Mother, Day Wave, Yumi Zouma, Mr. Little Jeans, The Kickback, Spirit Animal, VanLadyLove and others.
The other day, I caught the Washington, DC-based indie electro rock/electro pop sextet at The Knitting Factory on a bill that featured the French-born, New York-based math rock/indie rock duo Brightest Color, the Dover, DE-based indie rock trio Use Big Words and the Cleveland-born, New York-based singer/songwriter Dan Miraldi. Featuring Erik (vocals, drums) and Florent (vocals, guitar), Brightest Color are a French-born, New York-based math rock/indie rock band that the duo have described on their Facebook fan page as the “band you started in your head with your best friend in trade school.”

Opening the night was the Cleveland, OH-born, New York-based singer/songwriter Dan Miraldi. Miraldi’s musical career began in earnest while in his teens, as he played in several local rock bands including the Cherry Flavored Elevator and Exit Suburbia. Miraldi released his 2009 solo debut Thirsty, which was promptly followed by 2010’s Tease EP, an effort that featured “The Holy Roller Stone Revival,” a finalist for Best Rock Song in that year’s John Lennon Songwriting Competition. And during that period Miraldi split time between his hometown and Washington, DC, where he was also a founding member of the nationally recognized pop rock act The Silver Liners, an act that received placements on MTV series Teen Mom 2 and When I Was 17.
After releasing two more EPs with The Silver Liners, Miraldi left The Silver Liners in 2011 to fully focus on his solo career, writing and recording the Jim McKell-produced EP Rock ‘N’ RollBand, which was followed by an East Coast tour and a headlining CD release show at Cleveland’s House of Blues. 2012’s Dave Douglas-produced Sugar & Adrenaline was released to critical applause and received airplay on over 14o FM stations across North America and Europe, and was followed by a 50-date national tour with his touring band The Albino Winos. Adding to a growing profile, album single and video “Record Collection” received several thousand YouTube and Spotify streams.
Miraldi wrote and recorded his latest full-length effort Chaos, Destruction & Dancing before he relocated to New York and the album reportedly finds him expanding on the retro/classic rock sound that first captured the attention of the press and fans by adding elements of contemporary indie rock.
