Closing out a busy year of live music, I was at Rough Trade the other day to catch 4 sets of live music featuring New York-based rock trio BeechwoodDetroit, MI-based electro pop/electronic rock duo Gosh Pith, Brooklyn-based duo Psychic Twin and the night’s headliner, London-based shoegaze/electronic rock duo Girlyboi.

Out of all of these bands, if you’ve been frequenting this site, you’d be familiar with Detroit, MI-based duo Gosh Pith, who over the past year have become JOVM mainstays, while winning winning the attention of the blogosphere for a sound and songwriting approach that focusses on capturing a specific feeling or sensation, rather than capturing a concrete narrative. Considering that the duo, comprised of Josh Smith (vocals, guitar and production) and Josh Freed (samples, synths and production) reportedly started the project after a drunken and psychedelics fueled late night walk through the streets of Paris in which they found themselves moved and marveled by the sounds of their voices echoing of narrow streets, the focus on capturing mood before anything else shouldn’t be surprising. However, interestingly enough, over the past year the duo have been experimenting with their sound and songwriting approach over that same period of time — with their sound gradually becoming warmer and guitar becoming much more prominent and obvious throughout.

Comprised of Erin Fein and Rosana Caban, the electro pop duo Psychic Twin can trace their origins to when Fein began writing material that was intensely personal, nervously rhythmic and indebted to the 80s New Wave she listened to as a child — and much like that period, the duo’s sound manages to be both propulsive, atmospheric and swooningly Romantic.

In the case of Girlyboi, the London-based duo have received both national and attention with the release of their last two singles “Whole” and “Bedside” and have been touring Stateside with Gosh Pith to support their recently released Actual Woman EP. Check out photos from the show below.
