Live Concert Photography: herMajesty at The Bowery Electric 4/12/17
Although they’ve gone through several lineup changes and are currently comprised of founding member and primary songwriter JP (vocals, samples, guitar), David (bass, lead guitar), Dov (keys), Joan (bass) and Konrad (drums), the New York-based indie rock quintet herMajesty have developed a reputation for crafting elegantly, lush and moody material that’s heavily indebted to Roxy Music, David Bowie, U2 and psych rock. And with the release of several EPs including their most recent My Body Your Mind and a series of standalone singles, which includes a gorgeous cover of Patti Smith’s “Dancing Barefoot,” “One by One” and others, the New York-based band have seen a growing regional and national profile; in fact, the band has opened for The B52s, Tom Tom Club, Say Hi to Your Mom and The Boxer Rebellion — and have made frequent tour stops in Rochester, Providence, Philadelphia and Boston, as well as regular shows at Rockwood Music Hall in the Lower East Side. Interestingly, the band’s lead singer is a Greek-born, New York-based singer/songwriter, who was granted citizenship when he was eight years old — and his highly imagistic lyrics are largely inspired by his studies of modern Greek poetry, classic Greek tragedy, his own personal experiences, observations and feelings, most often thematically focusing on how the ghosts of the past merge with the present in a eerie and dream-like fashion.
I recently caught the band play a set at The Bowery Electric in the East Village, while trying to follow Game 1 of the Rangers vs. Canadiens Eastern Conference Playoff series last week. Check out pictures from the show below.
