Now, if you’ve been frequenting this site over the course of its six year history, you’ve come across a great deal of posts on New York-based singer/songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and JOVM mainstay artist Rene Lopez. And over that period of time, Lopez has further cemented a reputation as an artist who has uncompromisingly refused to be pigeonholed into one particular genre or one particular style; in fact, over the years Lopez has managed to mesh salsa, boogaloo, old-school hip hop, merging and electronica into a cohesive and funky whole on E.L.S.; salsa and 70s Brazilian music on his most deeply personal and yet breezy effort, Paint the Moon Gold; and slinkily seductive, synth-based R&B and funk, inspired by PrinceThe Gap BandRick JamesChic and others on Love Has No Mercy and his Jam of the Month series.

And while it’s been two years since Lopez has played a live show, he has been pretty busy — as he’s released the aforementioned Love Has No Mercy EP, his Jam of the Month series and has toured with renowned singer/songwriter Joseph Arthur. I recently caught Lopez at the first night of his continuing month-long residency at Nublu with probably one of the funkiest and tightest bands he’s played with in some time — and it was a set comprised of his Jam of the Month series and a few singles off Love Has No Mercy. Check out some photos  from the set below.
