Live Concert Photography:McCoy Tyner with Ron Carter and Roy Haynes at SummerStage, Rumsey Playfield 6/4/16
Although initially starting under rather humble beginnings, SummerStage has developed a reputation for presenting a diverse array of art, music and culture, and over the last couple of years, the festival and organizers have ensured that the festival has expanded to a number of parks throughout the city. The festival started off its 31st season earlier this month with a collection of jazz legends: pianist and octogenarian McCoy Tyner, perhaps best known as a member of the John Coltrane Quartet and for a lengthy and influential solo career; double bassist and octogenarian Ron Carter, who has appeared on well over 1,100 recording sessions with the Miles Davis Quintet, which featured contemporary superstars such as Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter and Tony Williams, the aforementioned McCoy Tyner, Horace Silver, Roy Haynes and countless others, as well as lengthy solo career that includes winning a Grammy for a composition he wrote for Round Midnight; and drummer and nonagenarian (!) Roy Haynes, who over the course of his 70 year career is considered one of the most recorded drummers in jazz history, recording in a wild variety of styles including swing, bebop, jazz fusion and avant-garde with an incredible array of jazz greats including Miles Davis, Charlie Parker, Thelonious Monk, Chick Corea, Pat Metheny and others. And interestingly enough, Haynes’ influence transcends jazz as The Rolling Stones‘ Charlie Watts and Jim Keltner recorded a tribute track to the great drummer, and Haynes has made on-stage appearances with The Allman Brothers Band during their concluding run as a band and with Phish‘s Page McConnell among others.
I was at SummerStage’s Central Park, Rumsey Playfield stage on what turned out to be a rainy and miserable night to catch the jazz legends; in fact, it was so miserable that I left shortly after shooting McCoy Tyner’s set — at that point, I was sopping wet and cold, and I just wanted to go home and put on some dry clothes. But in any case, check out photos from the show below.
