Os Clavelitos
LIC Bar
December 15, 2014
As many of you know, throughout the bulk of JOVM’s history, i was running the site while maintaining full-time positions at a company located in Times Square, and naturally it led to competing demands for my attention and time. A little over a week ago, I got laid off from my day job, which was in countless ways a blessing; if anything, this period has forced me to focus on things I’m deeply passionate about – this here site, in particular. So last night, I stopped by the LIC Bar in Long Island City to catch the Astoria-based samba band Os Clavelitos. And what’s particularly interesting about them is that unless they’re doing a cover, all of their original compositions feature lyrics in English, which isn’t terribly surprising when you see that the band is primarily made up of native English speakers. In some way, it’s the same sensibility that a band like Antibalas brings to the table and in it’s own right, it’s authentic because it doesn’t pretend to be anything but the musician’s interpretation.
