Photography: 35th Annual Coney Island Mermaid Parade, 6/17/17
As you can imagine, it’s already been an incredibly busy summer in which I’ve been balancing the responsibilities of my duties as an acquisitions editor, a social life and this blog. Now, if you’ve been frequenting this site throughout it’s seven year history, you’d know that it’s an annual tradition that I make the trip down to Coney Island for the annual Mermaid Parade to take pictures of gorgeous people in variety of impressive costumes to celebrate Coney Island, the beach and the summer solstice — simultaneously. As a New Yorker and as a photographer, it’s a fantastic day — countless beautiful people, who are more than willing to pose for you with a timeless and gorgeous backdrop, Nathan’s hot dogs, French fries and tons of beer. Who can complain, right?
Well, this year there was a torrential rainstorm that hit right as the parade was starting, and as I was on my way to Coney Island, which could have marred the whole day; but there’s something about being down there that brings sunny dispositions — and for a few hours at least, we had bright sunshine. Check out photos from this year’s parade below.
