Congratulations, Mayor-Elect Zohran Mamdani!
When I first photographed the now mayor-elect at Sunnyside’s St. Pat’s for All, he was polling in the single digits, just above “who?” “maybe not” and “none of the above.” I had heard about him through a photographer friend and was intrigued — but at the time, he barely registered. I was much more excited about photographing Congresswoman Alexandra Ocasio Cortez (for obvious reasons).
Mamdani won the Democratic Mayoral Primary in June. And by the time I saw him at Pride, the number of photographers crowding around him and his security team was insane. He quickly became as popular as AOC. As I was walking alongside him and his security team, trying to get a good shot over heads and through a crowd, I overheard someone yell “THE PEOPLE’S MAYOR IS HERE!” At that time, I realized that this campaign was different than anything I’ve seen in my entire life.
