Photography: Ori Carino’s “The Ramp: The Birthplace of Punk,” Rego Park 7/4/25

he founding members of the Ramones were neighborhood boys. As a teenager and young adult, I can proudly say that I walked many of the streets Joey and company walked around.

Ori Carino’s The Ramp is located on an unassuming garage ramp in an equally unassuming apartment complex in Forest Hills, a few hundred feet from Queens Blvd. The mural is based on a 1975 Bob Gruen photo, depicting the original lineup sitting on the ramp, how it looked back in 1975. The ramp itself is considered a key location in the band’s history — and a symbolic birthplace of punk. And it’s down the street from my apartment a bit.
