Rocky Dawuni is a Ghanian musician, humanitarian and activist, who was named one of Africa’s Top 10 global stars by CNN and a UN Ambassador. As a musician, Dawuni’s sound manages to fuse elements of old school, roots reggae, soul, pop  and Afrobeat in a rather unique yet familiar way – and it’s proven to be immensely popular, as Dawuni has performed in venues all over the world, and he’s performed with the likes of Peter Gabriel, Stevie Wonder, Bono, Janelle Monae, Jason Mraz, John Legend, and others.

Cumbancha Records recently signed Dawuni and will be releasing his forthcoming album Branches from the Same Tree sometime in 2015 and to celebrate that occasion they released the first single “African Thriller” and then enlisted KCRW’s Justin Sole to remix the track. Sole, who has remixed Fela Kuti, David Bowie, Thievery Corporation and others, adds a slick, club-ready beats to the track without altering the song’s soulfulness or message; in fact, he makes the song much more danceable, and in some way it pulls the song’s positive message to the foreground in a way that is unexpected.
