Russ Manning, a member of Twin Shadow, released one of my favorite albums last year, +1 EP under the moniker Rush Midnight. The material on  that EP is reminiscent of the slickly produced, seductive, synth-based R&B you’d hear on WBLS’s Quiet Storm back in the 80s – with elements of reggae. “Don’t Give Me Your Love” is the latest single, has the song has a conflicted narrator begging for his lover to leave him be, all while sounding like he’s yearning for her …

Although the video was recently shot, it conveys a sense of the gritty, grimy and dangerous New York. The club sequence at the beginning reminds me of the bathrooms and downstairs area of the old, nasty Continental, and of Coney Island High. It’s old nightlife, really.
