Sylvan Esso is a unique collaboration between Ameila Meath of folk group Mountain Man and Nick Sanborn, the bassist in Megafaun. Sanborn uses synths and other electronics to create pulsating grooves for Heath’s gorgeous and coquettish voice. Interestingly, her voice reminds me a little bit of Kalma Traver of Rubblebucket.
The duo recently released a 12 inch single, “Hey Mami/Play It Right” which is a rare double A side single, which also features an accapella and instrumental version of each song.
Recently the duo was invited to go into the Moog Studio Sound Lab, and they came in with a Macbook and Meath’s vocals. The studio they found themselves in had a complicated array of Moog synthesizers, Moogerfoogers and other electronics and allowed them to do this trippy and hypnotic reworking of “Hey Mami."
