The Leeds, UK-based quintet Hookworms have developed a reputation for their thunderous live sets, opening for the likes of Wooden ShjipsSun Araw and Peaking Lights. And they won over quite a few fans in their native England though the release of a number limited released singles and a self-titeld double EP, initially released on cassette tape and later on vinyl.

The band’s debut full-length Pearl Mystic will see a September 3rd release through Weird World Records stateside, and with the announcement of the release, the band released “Away/Towards,” as the first single from the album. The material on the album, including this single “Away/Towards” are heavily based on lead singer MJ’s own personal experiences — the bust up of a long-term relationship, a bout with depression, a “half-hearted suicide attempt” as he coins it, and more. As a single, the track possesses a palpable anxious tension that creates an ominous sense of malice and unease under the psychedelica.
