The Toronto, ON-based Beta Frontiers began under some rather humble circumstances – started in Michael Butler’s living room, as a home studio electronica experiment based on an assemblage of various influences. Some close friends encouraged him and his efforts, and as a result he wrote and recorded his debut EP, which has been described as possessing a retro-futuristic sound and “Hondo” feat. Becky Ninkovic, which brought Butler’s project much more attention.
“So Cold” feat. Carmen Elle (of DIANA) is Butler’s latest single, and it manages to have a retro feel – in some way, the track sounds as though it could have been released in 1983 as easily as it could have been released this week. But more important, it’s a summer jam that should have everyone swaying to Carmen Elle’s dreamily seductive vocals and balmily breezy synths.
