Comprised of Clinton Callahan (bass), Scotty Hoffman (guitar/vocals), Sam Jacobsen (organ), and Sean Zearfoss (drums), the quartet of Small Reactions have quickly developed a reputation for a sound that reportedly draws both cues and influences from the likes of Echo and the Bunnymen, Stereolab, Wire and even The Strokes. And although to my ears, that’s pretty debatable, you will hear the distorted angular guitars and motorik-like groove that will most likely sound dimly familiar, on “Terrorangles,” one of the latest singles off the band’s soon-to-be released debut full-length effort Similar Phantoms; however, unlike the influences the band reportedly claims, “Terrorangles” has a breezier feel that manages to lift the material a bit, and makes it radio friendly. As I think of it, the more this band reminds me of Japandroids, thanks to an anthemic, scream-along hook.

The band recently released the official video for the song and it feature some kaleidoscopic (and psychedelic) footage of the band playing the song, and in some way it looks and feels as though you might be watching under the influence of a powerful hallucinogen. But at the same time, it gives you a pretty good sense of how it would be like to catch them live; in fact, the release of the video was appropriate as it syncs with their live show at Cake Shop in the Lower East Side tonight.
