Originally from New Jersey and now currently based in Nashville, TN, the up-and-coming indie electro pop/indie rock quartet of Dinner And A Suit have spent the past two years on the road in support of their full-length debut, Since Our Departure — and naturally, the experience of constantly touring has deeply influenced the band’s recently STAY EP which was released earlier this week.
The quartet stopped at Gowanus Brooklyn’s The Rock Shop to celebrate the then-upcoming release of their EP – and of course, to build up buzz for the new release. And I was there based on the strength of the EP’s first single “Can’t Get Enough” which possesses an uncanny resemblance to several contemporary indie electro pop acts, including St. Lucia, Haerts, Foals, Cut Copy and others. In other words, it’s very much the sound of today – or shall I say the sound of the 80s? – in the sense that it’s hook-laden, slickly based synth pop with instrumentation, paired with plaintive and earnest vocals.
Frankly, it’s not the most earth shatteringly original sound out there and at some point the band may be forced to do something to break out of the pack and really capture the modern audience’s short attentions, but it’s absolutely danceable and sincere in a way that’s refreshing. Plus, they have the rare ability to write a catchy hook. So they have a future ahead of them – it’s a matter of what they do with it.
