Even with a hiatus that had their frontperson John Dwyer, focusing on an electronic-based sound, San Francisco’s Thee Oh Sees have managed to be incredibly prolific, as they’ve released more than a dozen albums since 2004.  And interestingly enough, each effort has managed to maintain a general garage psych rock aesthetic while being noticeably different.

Their forthcoming Mutilator Defeated At Last, slated for a May 18 release is reportedly one of the heaviest efforts the band has released in some time – although the new effort will also reportedly have two quieter songs that offer a bit of a reprieve from the album’s heaviest material. “Web” Mutilator’s opening track and first single is a decidedly psychedelic tune that structurally is comprised of a dreamily quiet section of shimmering guitar and anxiety-including drums, followed by a bruising power-chord section and thundering drums paired with Dwyer’s ethereal falsetto. it’s a twisting, turning trippy song that manages to possess a subtle menacing power (something that the band has managed to master for some time).
