If you’re a real hip-hop head and were coming of age in the late 80s and early 90s – and in particular, you dug the underground hip hop scene then. you’d probably heard of the Artifacts, as their debut effort Between a Rock and a Hard Place was released over 20 years ago. One of the emcees in the act, El Da Sensei, who was also a member of the Boom Skwad has still been recording and writing, and “Show Stoppa” produced by DJ Devastate is his latest single. With a bouncy, soul-based sample, this particular track reminds me of listening to Red Alert on KISS FM and Kid Capri on WBLS, and making mixtapes from radio broadcasts. Or more precisely, this song reminds me of listening to Showbiz and AG – “Soul Clap” and “Fat Pockets” come to mind and Jurassic 5, too.
