If you’ve been frequenting JOVM over the last couple of months, you may be familiar with the Los Angeles-based duo Ultra Violent Rays. Comprised of Cooper Gillespie (vocals, bass) and Greg Gordon (drums and sequencers), the duo claims influences such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division and Portishead – and in their earliest releases those influences were strongly apparent; however, with the band’s latest single “Wish” the band’s sound leans more towards a goth influenced pop as the song is comprised of eerily twinkling keyboard chords, swirling electronics, skittering percussion paired with coquettish, come hither vocals  all while subtly evoking an old lullaby. But at core of the song is a complex array of loneliness, desire, and regret which gives the song an urgent yet haunting feel.
