It’s the holiday season, and of course that means you’ll be hearing Christmas songs non-stop until you get sick of them around December 28th or so. You’ll also hear quite a number of bizarre Christmas compilations and covers – Bob Dylan doing Christmas songs anyone?

The folks at the Nashville, TN-based G.E.D Soul Records have released a compilation of Christmas songs featuring some of their artists, titled Super Soul Christmas. Opening the compilation is one of my favorites, Derobert and the Half-Truths doing their charming and romantic original “Christmas Kisses.” The Coolin’ System plays a chilled out, jazzy version of the Christmas classic, “It Came Upon a Midnight Clearing.” Magic in Threes play a buzzy, funky “We Three Kings.” Sky Hi’s “Christmas Crew,” has Derobert and the Half-Truth’s soul and a mix of trippy dub. The EP ends with AJ and the Jiggawatts‘ sad sack, bluesy “Sun Don’t Shine (Around Christmas Time)."

The album manages to capture the joy and the occasional sadnesses of the holiday season, and it does so in a fun way.
