Live Concert Photography: Sam Patch with Miles Francis at Mercury Lounge 3/10/17
Tim Kingsbury is a Guelph, ON-born, Montreal, QC-based singer/songwriter, who can trace the origins of his music career to when he began playing and perform music at the church he and his family regularly attended. As a teenager, Kingsbury moved on to Guelph’s local experimental, punk and indie rock scene and was a member of several bands before moving to Montreal and joining Arcade Fire in 2002. And while still a member of the renowned indie act, Kingsbury has managed to be a frequent collaborator with a number of musicians across a wide variety of genres; however, the Canadian singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist recently went solo with his latest recording project Sam Patch, with which he released his latest effort You You, And I last month.
Kingsbury has been touring to support You You, And I, an album with material that covered indie rock and pop with anthemic hooks and a singer/songwriter confessional nature — and the tour included a stop at Mercury Lounge earlier this month with New York-based pop artist Miles Francis. Now, if you’ve been frequenting this site over the past couple of months, you’d likely come across Miles Francis’ solo debut single “You’re a Star,” a single that employs a mischievously complex and propulsive polyrhythm, bursts of jerky and twinkling 8 bit Nintendo-like synths, a breezy and infectious hook wrapped around hushed and whispered vocals. And while clearly drawing from Afropop and Afrobeat, the song also seems to draw from Fear of Music and Remain in Light-era Talking Heads, making his debut single a bit of a departure from his previously recorded work as the renowned touring and sessions drummer and multi-instrumentalist Miles Arntzen. Interestingly enough, the rest of the material of his set leaned heavily towards prog rock and psych pop, while balancing a healthy sense of irony with an sincere, earnestness.
