Last year, Brooklyn-based indie hip-hop label Coalmine Records celebrated their tenth anniversary with the release of the Unearthed compilation, which featured the label’s most popular artists and a virtual who’s who list of contemporary underground hip-hop including Pharoahe Monch, Kool G Rap, Large Professor, The Artifacts, Blu, Sean Price, Billy Danze (of M.O.P.), Big Noyd, One Dae, Skillz, Guilty Simpson, Rah Digga, Maffew Ragazino, El Da Sensei, Fashawn, and others. One of the most written about and most popular songs from the compilation was El Da Sensei single “Show Stoppa” produced by the Swedish producer and DJ, DJ Devastate, and featured Young Padrino on the hook. The original track, (which you can check out below) featured El Da Sensei rhyming over the sort of soulful bass and flute sample paired with room rocking drum and bass that you’d expect to hear form the great J. Dilla.
To celebrate the limited re-issue of the Unearthed compilation on cassette tape, the folks at Coalmine Records recently released J57′s remix, which retains the El Da Sensei vocal sample, Young Padrino’s hook and DJ Devastate’s scratching but puts all of that over a sparse piano sample with industrial banging, clanging and buzzing in the background. While both the original and remix are headbanging tracks, J57′s remix possesses an icily futuristic sheen that belies a sense of menace.
