Created by a mysterious Rome-based multi-instrumentalist and Roman music scene veteran who has played guitar, bass and drums in several different projects that have helped to broaden his tastes, Absorbance is an electronic and math rock project that blends electronic sounds with distorted guitars, crunchy bass lines with am mixture of microtonality and altered pitches. And unlike their previous solo instrumental-driven math rock/prog rock and electronic music projects, Absorbance sees the mysterious Roman artist taking up lyric and vocal duties while crafting shorter, denser tracks. “My style is a mixture of the echoes of my listening experience, from King Crimson to Frank Zappa, from Don Caballero to Tera Melos, from Tuxedomoon to Black Midi, from The Residents to Captain Beefheart, from Terry Riley to Glenn Branca,” the Roman artist says.
The mysterious Roman artist’s latest Absorbance single “Step Out'” features intricate. constantly morphing rhythmic structures and churning, microtonal, non-Western standard 12-tone equal temperament tuning paired with an electronic framework. While drawing from math rock and prog rock, “Step Out” explores unusual intervals and harmonic relationships to create a mind-bending yet accessible and dance floor friendly tune.
“The goal with ‘Step Out’ was to implement an alternative musical aesthetic by working with unusual tunings and unfamiliar sonic textures,” the Italian artist says. “It’s an exploration of the acoustic spaces between standard notes, aiming to balance experimental theory with cohesive electronic production.”
“Step Out” is the first single of the soon-to-be-released, five-song, self-produced Tonecrusher EP. Each of the EP’s five songs were created with different tunings, and it serves as a conceptual precursor to the project’s next full-length album, Singular Perspective.
