New Audio: Velatine Returns with Dead Radio Remix of “Playing With The Orbits”

Producer, songwriter and musician Loki Lockwood is the creative mastermind behind the Melbourne-based darkwave/goth recording project Velatine. For the bulk of the project’s history, Lockwood collaborated with different vocalists while creating a unique and fresh take on the familiar and beloved darkwave/goth sound.

Lockwood discovered vocalist Holly Purnell through an Instagram ad. Purnell collaborated on “Oh See Me — The Siren,” and while working on that song, she joined as the project’s full-time vocalist. 

Released earlier this year, “Whisper Park,” the first Velatine with single with Purnell as a full-time member was a change in sonic direction, showcasing a more forceful goth and doom-like direction. That single’s follow-up, “Playing With The Orbits” was a bit of a return to form: Purnell’s yearning siren-like delivery was paired over a broodingly atmospheric and glitchy production that seemingly drew from elements of hip-hop, industrial, electronica and darkwave.

The Aussie duo recently released the Playing With The Orbits Dead Radio Remixes EP. The four-track EP sees the duo remixing and at times completely reworking the previously released single. The EP’s first single “Playing With The Orbits (Dead Radio Remix)” is both a a remix and subtle reworking that features punchier, harder hitting beats and a slightly faster tempo. The result is a remix that retains the original’s broodingly mediative air while seemingly channeling S/T LP and Version 2.0-era Garbage.
