Sophia Exiner, who writes, performs and records under the moniker of Phia is a Australian-born and Berlin, Germany-based indie pop artist whose sound has been compared to the likes of Bjork, tUnE yArDs, Regina Spektor and others – and that’s not a bad thing, considering that all of those artists have reputations for work that’s uncompromising, challenging and utterly unique…

In this live footage of her latest single “Do You Ever,” recorded as part of the Berlin Sessions, you’ll see Exiner using loop pedals to create the song’s harmony and melody with her own voice, and with her kalimba, an African thumb piano, popular throughout Sub-Saharan Africa.

When I first heard the song, i was struck by the breezy and ethereal nature of the song, and by Exiner’s coquettish vocals. Much like any great pop song, it has a super catchy hook and it’s utterly infectious – you’ll likely be humming and singing the hook for days without remembering how it happened.
