If you’re in the know, you might remember that we lost the great bluesman and singer/songwriter Syl Johnson earlier this year at the age of 85, due to congestive heart failure. Coincidentally, he died less than a week after his brother Jimmy, a bluesman himself.
I didn’t realize it but yesterday, Syl Johnson would have turned 86. As I’ve often told friends and followers on social media, Johnson was a criminally underrated and under-appreciated songwriter and musician, whose songs were moving, lived-in and full of novelistic attention to details.
So I wanted to wish Mr. Johnson a very happy — albeit belated — birthday. Happy birthday, wherever you are!
