The legendary Willie Mae “Big Mama” Thornton was born on this day 98 years ago. It seems that in some way that she’s being erased from history — but let’s not whitewash her importance. Elvis Presley and countless others stole from her. And yet, her work will be remembered forever, even if it’s through someone else’s theft.
America is exhausting. But let’s never forget that Black culture is American culture, and that we should revere all of our Black geniuses in all forms.
Happy birthday, Big Mama! Happy birthday, wherever you are!
