As a music obsessed little boy in the 80s, I watched a lot of MTV — Yo! MTV Raps, Headbanger‘s Ball, Club MTV and several others were favorites. De La Soul were an important part of my musical childhood. And without them, several other emcees and producers out there now wouldn’t be possible — including Mos Def, a.k.a Yasiin Bey and J. Dilla.
I was saddened to hear of David “Trugoy the Dove” Jolicoeur’s death. Posdnuos, Trugoy and Mateo’s work was revolutionary, playful, conscious, Black as fuck — and just meant everything to me. I turn 44 next month, and I’m seeing parts of my childhood die way too young. It’s heartbreaking.
R.I.P. brother. 54 is just way too young.
