With backgrounds in classical music and television soundtrack scoring, the Southern California-based electro pop duo of Jen Grady and Justin Hosford and their latest music project, Chelan employs some elements of their classical training to craft a sound based around harmonic layering and soundscapes – while thematically being based around modern anxieties, modern struggles and naturally, the complexities of relationships. Interestingly, “Pretend We Live Forever” the first single form the duo’s forthcoming full-length effort, Equal Under Pressure manages to bear a resemblance to the likes of New Zealand’s Doprah and ultimately to Portishead – as you’ll hear hip-hop driven beats paired with swirling electronics, subtle layers of synth and ethereal vocals that float through the mix.
