Brooklyn-based band, Miracles of Modern Science have a sound unlike any band I’ve come across in the almost three years that I’ve run this site – based around string instruments, the band manages to meld classical textures with an infectiously fun, almost post punk sound. The band began at Princeton University, where vocalist/double bassist Evan Younger and mandolinist Josh Hirshfeld lived in the same dorm their freshman year. Feeling out of place at a school where cover bands and Top 40 DJs dominated nightlife, they hijacked open mic nights with off-kilter acoustic collaborations. They found kindred spirits in other restless musicians from the school’s orchestras and jazz bands: conductor-by-day cellist Geoff McDonald, violinist Kieran Ledwidge, and drummer Tyler Pines, who convinced the rest of the band to plug in their instruments. 

The band’s 2011 full-length debut, Dog Year was praised by Paste Magazine, NPR, Wired and Beats Per Minute. MOMS will be releasing their follow up EP, MEEMS on February 19th, and based on the EP’s first single, “Singularity,” the band’s sound still maintains an element of indie rock but seems to inch closer to modern pop music – but with an inviting, charming warmth and sincerity that most contemporary pop music woefully lacks. 

And in order to support the new effort, MOMS will be on a rather lengthy tour which starts off with two NYC area dates – January 26th at (le) Poisson Rouge and their album release show at the Studio at Webster Hall on February 21st. Some of the other stops include Washington, DC; Durham, NC; Athens, GA; Nashville, TN; Hattiesburg, MS; SXSW; Phoenix, AZ; San Diego CA; Los Angeles, CA; and San Francisco, CA.
