Electronica artist and producer, Derek Vincent Smith, writes, records and performs under the moniker of Pretty Lights, and as Pretty Lights, Smith has become one of the biggest electronica artists in the world: he’s played at some of the biggest festivals in the world including Bonnaroo, the Electric Daisy Carnival and others.

Naturally, like most EDM artists, his sound and live shows consisted of computers, sequencers and live production; however, Smith’s sound has evolved as lately he’s been using a backing band.  And as you can hear on “Give Your Love Away” recorded live at Red Rocks, Pretty Lights’s sound has gotten richer as it now includes full analog sound sculpting with band dubbing, live bass, looping, live synths and sample playing all fed through a modular command center.  In a small way, it pushes Smith’s sound closer to a band like Jazzanova but with an emphasis on hip hop breakbeats.

Over the rest of the year, Pretty Lights will be touring with the live band to support his latest effort A Color Map of the Sun and the tour starts October 10th in Kansas City, MO and goes throughout the Midwest and West until November 30th.
