Influenced by the likes of Prince, Aaliyah, Janet Jackson and Sade, vocalist Sonya Teclai has received quite a bit of attention across the blogosphere for a sound which comprises of elements of hip-hop, contemporary R&B, and trip hop. Her latest single “Hurt Me” is a slow-burning, seductive track with eerily ambient synths that also employs elements of hip hop – thanks to the drumbeat and the bridge where Teclai rhymes effortlessly for a few bars.
At the heart of the song is sexually charged, dysfunctional relationship that has the narrator wondering how much of a victim are they, if they’re willing participant, and in some way they can’t separate what they know is right from what they feel in their head. It’s a messed up and conflicting situation that should feel familiar to some of us.
