Last Friday, I was at the David Rubenstein Atrium at Lincoln Center to catch the legendary Joe Bataan and his backing band, The Barrio Boys + 1. Bataan is one of the pioneers of salsasoul, a sound that meshed elements of doo wop, soul, salsa and Boogaloo.

The New York-born legend also is a hip-hop pioneer — yes, seriously — with 1979’s “Rap-O, Clap-O,” an early hip-hop hit, along with The Sugarhill Gang‘s “Rapper’s Delight” and others.

Bataan played a crowd-pleasing and career spanning set that bounced around his legendary and beloved catalog and a handful of covers, including Chaka Khan and Rufus‘ “Ain’t Nobody.”

As always, photos from the set are below.
