Brooklyn-based Afrobeat outfit Kaleta and Super Yamba Band is fronted by Afrobeat and Juju vet. singer/songwriter and guitarist Leon Ligan-Majek, a.k.a. Kaleta. Born in Benin Republic, Ligan-Majek relocated to Lagos, Nigeria, where his guitar playing led him to decades of touring and recording with the likes of King Sunny Adé, Fela Kuti, Lauryn Hill and countless others. Ligan-Majek has been fronting Super Yamba Band since 2017 and since then, the act has released their full-length debut, 2019’s Mèdaho which draws on the psychedelic funk that Ligan-Majek loved as a music loving kid back in the 70s.
The Brooklyn-baed Afrobeat outfit hosted a month-long residency at Baby’s All Right last month that featured the band playing with an eclectic array of local acts. The first night of the residency featured the Afrobeat act headlining the night, and longtime JOVM mainstay Miles Francis opening. Check out photos below.
