Just the other night, I was at Rockwood Music Hall to catch the Houston, TX-born, New York-based pop/soul singer/songwriter Melany Watson and the Richmond, VA-born, Los Angeles, CA-baseed pop/soul artist Rayvon Owen. Now if you’ve been frequenting this site over the past few months, Watson’s name will likely be familiar, as I’ve written about “Illuminate,” the first single off of Watson’s soon-to-be released Lilith In Virgo EP. And although sonically, that single is clearly inspired by contemporary pop, lyrically the song owes a great debt to Watson’s country music upbringing as the song is a narrative-driven song informed by her own personal experiences; in this case, the song’s narrator wonders what it truly means to be in a relationship and to be someone’s soulmate — and if the relationship that she has been in, is the the one that she’s supposed to be in.
Opening the night was the aforementioned Rayvon Owen. Born in Richmond, VA, Owen much like Watson can trace his music career to when he was a child; in fact, at a young age, Owen sang in church choirs, toured with gospel musicians and performed in local musicals. Influenced by Lionel Richie, John Legend, Katy Perry, and Stevie Wonder, Owen has developed a reputation for being a reflective songwriter with an expressive vocal range. Interestingly, Owen met Watson while they were both students at Belmont University — and during his time in Nashville, TN the Richmond, VA-born, Los Angeles-based artist spent his time writing and performing with local musicians at a variety of local events, venues and showcases. Upon graduation, Owen relocated to Southern California, where he eventually wrote hi debut EP Cycles which featured his standout hit “Sweatshirt.” But most likely if you watched American Idol, you may remember that he was a “Twitter Save” champion and a Top 4 finalist during season 14, which quickly expanded his profile nationally.
