Singer/songwriter Judith Hill comes from a very musical family — her mother is a renowned, classically trained pianist from Japan and her father is a bassist, who had stints playing with Sly Stone, Chaka Khan, RUFUS, and others, and presumably as a result of being surrounded by so much music, Hill wrote her first song when she was four.
Hill received national and international attention after her appearance in the highly acclaimed music documentary, 20 Feet From Stardom, and the movie subsequently won an Oscar for Best Documentary and a Grammy for Best Music Film. In some way, the attention towards Hill and her solo work may feel like a long-time coming from an artist who has backed the likes of Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Elton John, John Legend, and Josh Groban.
After naming
Prince as her dream collaborator in an interview, Hill found herself collaborating with the legendary and influential artist on both her debut effort,
Back In Time, which she co-produced with
Minneapolis‘ most famous resident (slated for an October 23 release through
NPG Records) and a guest appearance on “Million $ Show” off Prince’s latest album,
HITNRUN Phase One. And as a result of those collaborations, Hill opened for Prince during the tour to support
HITNRUN.
“Cry Cry Cry” is a Muscle Shoals soul-leaning pop song that fits in perfectly with the soul revival movement popularized by the likes of
Charles Bradley,
Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings and countless others, as the song is bolstered by a big horn section — but more importantly the song reveals Hill as a pop belter in the tradition of
Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan and countless others. With that in mind, check out this live footage of Hill performing the song on
The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.
Hill is making an NYC area stop with a solo set at
The Cutting Room tomorrow. Check out ticket information
