When dear friends move away, it often means that you don’t see them as often as you’d like — and if you’re as much of a workaholic as I am, it often means that you see your dear friends even less; hell, I sometimes go months without seeing the dear friends I have, who live within the five boroughs. Admittedly, I have to try to do a bit better in that department. Interestingly enough, a very dear friend of mine K (who I’ve mentioned a handful of times in the past) hit me up on Facebook sometime ago and told me that she had an extra ticket to see Yasiin Bey (a.k.a Mos Def) at the Apollo Theater, and asked me if I would like to go. Of course, my immediate response was — “Yes! Count me in!”
Over the past few months, Bey has publicly claimed that he would be retiring from music and acting, and in some way he’s ending his reported last year of major artistic pursuits on a rather prolific note as he announced that he had written and recorded 3 albums — the Ferrari Sheppard produced December 99th, which dropped yesterday, a long-awaited full-length collaboration with Mannie Fresh, As Promised and a solo, full-length effort Negus in Natural Person. Arguably done as both a farewell and to support the new album, Yasiin Bey is performing a handful of what could be some of his last live sets in the States, ever with a cadre of friends and collaborations — including two sets at the Apollo Theater. The good folks at Ambrosia 4 Heads shot this incredible footage from last night’s set including a number of highlights throughout his catalog, as well as a ton of new material. Check it out.
