Wallace Gollan, who performs under the mononym Wallace, is a Sydney, Australia-based singer/songwriter, whose expressive and soulful vocals are paired with a sound that draws heavily from blues, soul, jazz and pop, and as a result she’s been compared to Erykah Badu, Little Dragon and Carmen McRae.
Her latest track “Beauty” pairs Gollan’s effortless and expressive vocals with skittering, off-kilter, jazz and hip-hop inspired percussion, twinkling keys a sinuous bass line to craft a song that seems to shuffle and swing with a understated, self-assured confidence and infectious, world-winning charm.
As Gollan explains in press notes, the song “is ssentially me talking to myself (which I do a little too often). The chorus is me reminding myself that I create my own success: ‘Caught ya, caught ya, caught ya sewing new starts into my sky’ and for lack of a better metaphor every cloud has a silver lining: ‘Caught ya, caught ya, caught ya re-arranging my clouds.'” The song’s narrator realizes that she has the awesome, life-altering power to create her own success, to create the life of her choosing — and throughout the song, the narrator seems to recognize that power, and fearlessly wants to go about to do what she feels she needs to do. Adding to the song’s uplifting, super positive “girl, you can go out there and achieve everything” vibe is a guest verse from local emcee Sampa The Great that fits the song and it’s powerful message perfectly.
