Best known for their work in Cardiff, Wales-based, British Chart topping act Super Furry Animals, Huw ‘Bunf’ Bunford’s, Cian Ciarán’s, Dafydd Ieuan’s and Guto Pryce’s latest project, Das Koolies finds the quartet making a decided sonic and aesthetic left turn from their best known work: their club friendly debut single “It’s All About The Dolphins” is a propulsive electro pop/techno track featuring thumping beats, layers of synth arpeggios and slick hooks — and while bearing a bit of a resemblance to Kasabian, the track thematically expresses sorrow over humanity’s iron-clad grip over nature. And while centered around computers and machines, there’s still traces of living, breathing, feeling humans — primarily through the song’s falsetto melody.
The recently released video for “It’s All About The Dolphins” is fittingly all super futuristic fuzz and glitchiness that moves with the song’s propulsive beats. But just underneath that is some distorted footage of dolphins leaping. It’s trippy and disorientating.
